Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT)
PET scanning uses a special radiopharmaceutical that tracks the degree of body tissue metabolism. It is particularly useful for detection of many types of cancer and to check for tumor spread. This modality is also used to assess for response in certain types of tumor after treatment, to better guide future therapy.
CRA Medical Imaging’s scanner combines the PET examination with a multi-slice CT examination to better pinpoint any areas of PET abnormality.
Prior to your scan, you will receive an injection of the radiopharmaceutical and then rest quietly for a period prior to the study. This rest period limits activity in normal tissue and allows time for the agent to localize in any abnormal tissue, if present. Dependent on your physician’s orders, you may also receive an intravenous injection for the CT component during the exam.
PET/CT is performed at our Medical Imaging Center office, 5008 Brittonfield Parkway in East Syracuse.
